Brother-in-law Peter commented about my recent video post of Delbert McClinton that he wasn't sounding too good these days, but he was still cool. A story about Delbert, Peter's old college roommate and an old flame:

was going to be playing soon at some town up there in the Colorado mountains. So
at the next Thursday night "vinyl night" neighborhood cookout he dragged out all
his old Delbert albums. Well, one beer led to another, and eventually to the
ill-advised late night phone call to the one-time love back in Austin. That old
sweet talker Bob says, "Darlin, come on up to Colorado to see Delbert one more
time, for old times sake." Only this time it worked! She came, love or something
like it conquered, and Bob is feeling a little bounce in his step. All cuzza
Delbert. Still cool indeed.
I tortured Keith, Vin and the rapper Rant On with Strange Boys & Girls Club while driving around the Cape a couple years ago.
(From Wikipedia, so it must be true)- The Strange Boys were formed in Dallas, Texas in 2001 as a punk duo by Ryan Sambol and Matt Hammer while the pair were in 8th grade. Ryan's brother Philip returned to Dallas from college and joined in 2003.
The band released their debut Nothing EP in 2007 on Dusty Medical Records and in 2008 their first full-length album, entitled and Girls Club via In the Red Records on March 3, 2009.
In late 2009 the band underwent some line-up changes, with drummer and founding member Matt Hammer being replaced by Seth Densham, originally of Mika Miko (who disbanded in October, 2009). Jenna Thornhill-DeWitt, also a former member of Mika Miko, was added as saxophonist and backing vocalist, and Tim Presley, of Darker My Love, also joined to contribute backing vocals. Seth left the group and Mikey La Franchi joined on drums.
Around the same time, the newly-outfitted line-up of the Strange Boys signed a deal with UK record label Rough Trade to distribute their material outside of the US, and also announced details of their second album, Be Brave, which was released on February 22, 2010 (UK) and February 23, 2010 (US). The album was preceded by a single release of the title track, 'Be Brave' on January 25 (UK) and January 26 (US). The band has now announced they are working on their third album "Live Music", (live pronounced as in "I live in the basement") released exclusively on Rough Trade and not In the Red records.

(ABC News) - Steven Tyler, lead singer of the rock band Aerosmith and a judge on the
hit TV show “American Idol,” bloodied his face and knocked out teeth
Tuesday when he fell in his hotel room in Asuncion, Paraguay, Reuters
reports. The report cites comments made to local radio by Gustavo Perez, a
bellboy at Bourbon Hotel, in Asuncion, Paraguay’s capital. Perez is
quoted as saying Tyler slipped in the shower and had “a nasty fall.” Paraguay’s largest newspaper, ABC, said Tyler, 62, was seen being
brought into a hospital emergency room, where he was treated for
injuries including a cut on his eyebrow and two knocked-out teeth. Tyler was to perform with Aerosmith later that evening, and the show has been postponed, ABC said. Representatives of Tyler did not reply to requests for comment.
Waits’s
new album, “Bad as Me,” his twenty-second, has plenty of stone gargling. It was
made with a vast constellation of new and old friends, the most prominent of
whom is an often overlooked collaborator, his wife, Kathleen Brennan, who has
been writing songs with Waits since his album “Swordfishtrombones,” from 1983
(for which she was uncredited). “She responds to things like she’s in an opium
dream. I’m more of a sticks-and-wire guy,” he said. (Much of what he says in

(relaxnews)- American singer, songwriter, composer and actor Tom Waits is streaming his brand-new album Bad As Me online ahead of its official release date, October 24/25. His 31st album, featuring 13 tracks, is also being packaged as a deluxe edition that includes three additional songs: "She Stole the Blush," "Tell Me," and "After You Die." Members of Tom Waits's mailing list will have already received a code to access the LP, but fans without codes can sign up to stream the album at badasme.com.
This will be Waits's first album since Glitter and Doom Live, released in 2009. Prior to that album, he released his 2006 three-disc collection Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, which earned a Grammy nomination.
Waits played alongside Denzel Washington in the film The Book of Eli and is currently working on a new stage musical with director and long-time collaborator Robert Wilson and playwright Martin McDonagh. War, what is it good for? Absolutely nuthin (say it again)! Yes, I know it's not the same group (Edwin Starr), but if it's good enough for Seinfeld, it's good enough for me.

Formed in 1969, War was a musical crossover band which fused elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin, rhythm and blues, and reggae.[1] The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. Although War's lyrics are often socio-political in nature, their music usually had a laid-back, California funk vibe. A particular feature of War's sound is the use of harmonica and saxophone playing melody lines in unison, sounding like a single instrument, for example in the melody of "Low Rider". (cmt.com) - Her first-ever album, titled simply Crystal Gayle, was released in 1974, and the following year she landed her first Top Ten country hit, "Wrong Road Again." In 1976, "I'll Get Over You" became the first of her 17 number one country singles. Reynolds, feeling that Gayle was poised for a larger breakthrough, encouraged her to record the jazz-flavored pop ballad "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," which he felt sure had crossover potential. He was right -- not only did the song hit number one on the country charts in 1977, it also climbed to number two on the pop side, garnered substantial international airplay, and won Gayle a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal. Plus, the accompanying album, We Must Believe in Magic, became the first by a female country artist ever to go platinum. (the whole enchilada)

The Litchfield Jazz Festival announced that it is moving from the Kent School back to its previous location, the Goshen Fairgrounds, for next year's event. In addition, because the Newport Jazz Festival last year moved to the first weekend in August, making jazz lovers choose between the two, the 2012 LJF will be held the 2nd weekend in August. Good move. While the grounds of the Kent School are spectacular, LJF was not able to take advantage of them, opting rather, because of drainage and other issues, to hold the event in the hockey facility, a setting that, in my mind, completely changed the presentation from an outdoor 'festival' to that of an indoor 'concert'.
And not for the better. According to a Wtby Republican-American article, attendance had declined by about 50% in the three years at Kent. From personal experience at the 2009 festival, we (The Reet and I with Trish and George) were less than impressed with the opening night Gala at a nearby art gallery and subsequent music presentation at the hockey rink (albeit the performers, Jane Monheit et al, were first rate).

Festival survey, and we've heard you loud and clear. You want us to
provide you again with a true "festival" experience - music in an
outdoor setting where you can all join together to enjoy it. Your choice
of venue was overwhelmingly our old home at Goshen Fairgrounds and we
will be returning the Festival there in 2012. We were all aware of the
unfortunate conflict created when Newport
moved to our weekend and noted that, too, in your responses. Now you
won't have to choose. Litchfield Jazz Festival is moving to the second
weekend in August, August 10 - 12.
Kent
School, our gracious host for the last three years, will remain the
home of Litchfield Jazz Camp which will now grow from a month-long to a
five-week-long program. Camp registration will be open online soon.
We will continue with our free concert series, Kent Has THAT Jazz, during the months of July of August, and thank Kent businesses for being involved.

Milford, Connecticut's thriving night scene, DANIEL STREET is mere steps from the Metro North
Train station, a short stroll from Milford Landing Marina, and easily accessible from Interstate
I-95.
(AP) "I've come to the decision basically or the belief that it's just who I am," Earle said. "I'm a songwriter. I'm an artist. I am my mother's son. I am my father's son. And I'm a drug addict. And it was a behavior that I displayed very early on in my life. When I was a kid, my mom would buy granola bars and stuff and I would eat the whole box. One after the other until I was sick."
His mother, Carol-Ann, had to work and the home was often empty. But there were times when it was too full as well with the occasional boyfriend. The result was the feeling that he had no safe haven.
Drugs quickly became a diversion from an existence that "hurt all the time."
"I remember I got high the first time when I was 10 off of reefer and I just loved it," Earle said. "By 11 I was just an avid marijuana smoker. I smoked constantly. It wasn't heroin, it was Dilaudid, the pharmaceutical pain killer, that was first thing I got my hands on. I just remember getting hit with it and it just felt like everything was just going to be OK, until of course it wore off and I was sick as (expletive) until the next morning. But even with the sickness, I wanted to go back and capture that feeling again, you know? I started to shut down at that point."
His teen years flashed by, a montage of searches for drugs, living with both his mother and father at times before leaving to live on his own in his late teens. He went to Chicago at 18 and found really pure heroin for the first time in his life. He eventually had to come back home, penniless, hopelessly addicted and pretty much washed up already as a performer. He sold what he thought would be his last guitar at 20. He awoke one morning and couldn't believe what he saw in the mirror of his rundown motel room. (the whole enchilada)

speaker...Yvette's parent have record player and was even thinking of
buying the vinyl...is the sound that much better?...
JohnnyK response -I'm not a vinyl snob; it's so much more convenient listening via iPod or
even CD. I find it funny that people who grew up listening to rock n
roll on transistor radios (and loved it) are so concerned with the
nuances of audio 'warmth'. Conversely, when I do listen to vinyl, I am not put off by a few hisses and pops in the record. It's only rock n roll. However, I do think that when listening to jazz or classical music, the quality of the reproduced sound is more important.

Less than a day after the Black Keysannounced the release of their new album, El Camino, via a goofy website and faux car commercial starring Bob Odenkirk, Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney have revealed more details about the LP. El Camino is out December 6 on Nonesuch worldwide. As previously reported,
it was co-produced by the Black Keys and Danger Mouse. First single and

Both of Steve Miller's parents were music buffs and family friend, Les Paul,
was among the first to teach and encourage Miller on guitar. When the
family moved to Texas, Miller was directly exposed to black music and
blues musicians and his initial high-school bands (one of which included
his friend Boz Scaggs) focused on Jimmy Reed-style rhythm and blues.
Like countless others before him, Miller was soon drawn to Chicago,
where he honed his guitar skills in the demanding Chicago blues scene,
eventually forming a band which included the likes of Barry Goldberg,
Charlie Musselwhite and Harvey Mandel.
The Steve Miller Band
headlined a four night run at Fillmore West that featured Pogo (Poco,
prior to being forced to change their name) and Sly & The Family
Stone as openers. In addition to capturing the Miller, Scaggs, Turner,
Peterman, Davis lineup at their peak, Chicago bluesman Paul Butterfield
also makes a guest appearance on several numbers, adding his distinctive
blues harp to the proceedings. The recording kicks off with an
extended rave-up on "Mercury Blues," one of the group's early signature
songs and the first of two to appear in this set from the Revolution
soundtrack. Following this, Miller invites Paul Butterfield to join in
and the musicians sink their teeth into "Blues With A Feeling." While
the guitar work cooks on this Chicago-style blues, it's the tight
cohesiveness of this band that is most impressive and Butterfield and
the Miller Band burn for eight solid minutes. The next number seems to
be a purely spontaneous blues supporting Butterfield and although looser
than usual, it's another strong performance from beginning to end. (the whole enchilada)

Sarah Borges is making a new record and needs some fundraising help, so we are trying to arrange an in-house concert in the near future. And the idea seems to have some life. For example, famous rap artist, Rant On, pens: "So why don't we get a bunch of us and get her to do a concert at one of our homes. That would be a blast."
Interestingly, that very scenario may be in the works, Rant. I pitched this last week to a friend, who is also a Sarah fan and has a spacious house here in Southington. She thought it was a fabulous idea, but also knows another couple who has a barn/garage where they give parties that would be even a better venue. We are going to have dinner next week and brainstorm it. My thought is charge $50 a head, byob and a food dish. Would be like a night out for dinner, but with a great show. What do you think? The Sawtelles resume their First Friday residency tonight at Typhoon Restaurant on Main Street, Middletown. Great food, music, byob. We will be at a wedding, but hope to catch them next month. Told me there should be a live CD forthcoming of their recent performance, along with Frank Critelli and others, at Buttonwood Tree in Middletown.

(From Wikipedia, so it must true)- Freddie King (September 3, 1934 – December 28, 1976), thought to have been born as Frederick Christian, originally recording as Freddy King, and nicknamed "the Texas Cannonball", was an influential African-American blues guitarist and singer. He is often mentioned as one of "the Three Kings" of electric blues guitar, along with Albert King and B.B. King, as well as the youngest of the three.
Freddie King based his guitar style on Texas and Chicago influences and was one of the first bluesmen to have a multi-racial backing band onstage with him at live performances. He is best known for singles such as "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" (1960) and his Top 40 hit "Hide Away" (1961). He is also known for albums such as the early, instrumental-packed Let's Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King (1961) and the later album Burglar (1974), which displayed King's mature versatility as both player and singer in a range of blues and funk styles.
King had a twenty-year recording career and became established as an influential guitarist with hits for Federal Records, in the early 1960s. He inspired American musicians such as Jerry Garcia, Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother Jimmie Vaughan and others. His influence was also felt in UK, through recordings by blues revivalists such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Chicken Shack.

but has been involved in the local scene for 15+ years. She is leaving, apparently for Massachusetts, and her last program was September 27. She also produces live shows all around the CT area and her last show will be the fabulous Dex Romweber Duo at Cafe Nine on November 6.

(From Wikipedia, so it must be true)- Al Stewart was a key figure in a fertile era in British music and he appears throughout the musical folklore of the age. He played at the first ever Glastonbury Festival in 1970, knew Yoko Ono before she met John Lennon, shared a London apartment with a young Paul Simon, and hosted at the legendary Les Cousins folk club in London in the 1960s. Stewart has released sixteen studio and three live albums since his debut album Bedsitter Images in 1967, and continues to tour extensively around the US and Canada, Europe and the UK. His latest release, is Uncorked, which was released on his independent label, Wallaby Trails Recordings. He has worked with Peter White, Alan Parsons, Jimmy Page, Richard Thompson, Rick Wakeman, Tori Amos and Tim Renwick and recently has played with Dave Nachmanoff and former Wings lead-guitarist Laurence Juber.

What a beautiful record. Truly gorgeous, the kind that wins both
hearts and awards — perfect for a dinner party, a drive along Pacific
Coast Highway, or a good, healthy cry. It’s the record that Leslie
Feist, who records as Feist, has hinted at on four earlier solo albums
over the last dozen years. On “Metals,” the Canadian American harnesses all her gifts to create
something essential: the matter-of-fact gorgeousness of her voice, best
illustrated on her massive 2007 hit, “1234”; the way she mixes
complicated emotions with equally complicated arrangements while making
it all seem so effortless; and a versatility that allows her to craft a
compilation’s worth of sounds and approaches without lapsing into
pastiche. Granted, “Metals” isn’t a particularly dangerous record; your
mom and dad will dig this, so will your daughter. But at least they’ll
agree on something. - (the whole enchilada)

So I'm making a solorecord! Not a 'girl with a guitar sings confessional songs' kind of solo record.
I promise not to play any twee piano. It will be a record that sounds like me.
For those of you who have been to a show, you know what that means. I'm
33, and this is not my first time at the dance, so it will be a little
brassy, kind of pretty, and hopefully a lot fun. Like what?, you may ask...Well. First, a great studio record with great musicians produced by Steve Berlin from Los Lobos, for starters. I'm guessing that I need $15,000 to make this thing go. I'm going to try to do it in 60 days. That seems like a lot,
you may say. Here's the stuff we've got to do: pay for the studio and
an engineer, mixing and mastering, artwork and duplication, give the
musicians something for their time and effort, etc. So...
Here's what I'm gonna do:
If you give $25: I'll give you a copy of the record, a download of a demo of 'Big Bright
Sun', one of the songs on said record, and some fabulous stickers to
decorate your guitar case, briefcase or head case.
If you give $60: Copy of the record, download of 'Big Bright Sun', stickers, I'll record
the voicemail for your phone or cell phone (I can sing it if you
want!), and I'll send you a lovely thank you note expressing my
gratitude. I'll also send you a fabulous t-shirt available only to
folks who contribute to the making of the record, specially created and
personalized just for you!
If you give $120: Everything from the previous levels, plus downloads of two other record
demos ('Record on Repeat', written by me, Lyle Brewer and Ryan
Hedgecock from Lone Justice!, and 'Mind on Me', written by me and Freedy
Johnston! (you can even hear me play kick drum and bass on it!), a

listed above is yours, plus I will make you a piece of artwork. No, it
won't be a stick figure drawing. Here's a photo of a cigar box I made
recently. I don't totally suck. And I will sign and inscribe it to you
and only you.
If you give $500: All
of the above, AND I will learn a song of your choosing (it doesn't have
to be by me) and record it acoustically for you. I will also somehow
incorporate your name into the album artwork (in an artful way) of the
new record.
If you give $1250: You get everything previously listed AND I will come to your house and
play a solo house concert for you where you pick the set list from my
songs. How fun! (You need to live in New England or New York for this
one).-OR-You
get everything previously listed AND you can pick the set list for a
show I play. (You can live anywhere for this one.) It has to consist
primarily of my songs or songs I've covered in the past, but you can
pick one song just for you even if it is 'Freebird'. And you can get
onstage and sing/play it. Risky for me, I know, but my love for my art
has no limit. I jest.
If you give $2000: Ok,
deep breath...everything above but the house concert, and I will custom
write a song for you. You could use this opportunity to propose to your
girl/boyfriend, to break up with that girl/boyfriend, to tell your boss
you quit. Hell, you could even profess your love for manicotti.
Whatever you'd like.
If you give $3000: All
above (minus that house concert), PLUS I will give you my first
electric guitar. It's a 1970's Guild M-75 Songbird, burgundy red. It has
a tune-o-matic bridge sunken into the body that I had done custom. It's
made of mahogany and weighs a ton. Comes with a case. I bought it off a
guy when I was 17 from my hometown who told me that it 'wasn't metal
enough'. It's been stolen from me by a guy from Alabama who got caught
because he was dumb enough to leave a receipt from Guitar Center in the
case when he bought a strap after he stole it from me. He went to jail, I
got the guitar back. And it can all be yours! And finally.
If you give $5000+: I
know this is a lot of money for just a little ol' gal like me. But what
if there was something that I could do that would make you really
happy? (Get your minds out of the gutter people, not that happy.) It
would have to be something that we could both agree on, like me
officiating your wedding or something, but try me! I'm sure that we
could figure out something amazing. (You'd have to email
