Jane, this guy (Htfd Courant jazz critic Own McNally) is in love with you...

Jane Monheit, 31 And Post-Baby, Is Enjoying The Maturing Of Her Career, Image
Vocalist Jane Monheit's robust, irreverent sense of humor — especially crisp and candid when mocking sexual stereotypes in the music biz — might surprise enraptured fans who envision her solely as a gorgeous, dulcet-toned diva, a divine sex symbol who also happens to sing like an angel. One of the jazz world's great storybook successes of the 21st century, Monheit, who's now 31 and a first-time mom, tells The Courant she never really was comfortable being groomed and mass-marketed as a "jazz princess" after her debut album, "Never Never Land," became an instant success in 2000.

Monheit, the headliner for the Litchfield Jazz Festival's opening night Friday at 9:15, experienced her first taste of what would become a feast of public acclaim in 1998 when, at only 20, she won the first runner-up prize at the Thelonious Monk Institute Vocal Competition. Early in her career, before morphing into a glittering, globe-trotting superstar, the young singer, still a promising work-in-progress, was transfixing audiences in Connecticut. In 2001, a breakout year for her career, she made a dazzling appearance at opening night of the Litchfield Jazz Festival, as the warm-up act for the legendary Danbury-based Dave Brubeck. - complete article

A seriously pissed off Dr. John visits the Wolf Den Tuesday evening...

We wuz in the right place, positioned along the railing at the bar of Mohegan Sun's Wolf Den to catch New Orlean's favorite doctor with his Lower 911 band Tuesday night. Quick trip over, Keith (driving, deftly avoiding the speed trap just before the entrance to the casino), The Reet and I. No Sharie, she had other social activities planned.

Showtime is at eight, so we park and scout out the situation at the Den. Bored looking people stand in line waiting to be seated, but the bar was pretty barren. Good, for that's our spot. Scouting done, we look for a place to get a quick bite to eat - long lines at Frank Pepe and Bobby Flay. Upstairs in the retail area, it's crowded because THE SUN IS PLAYING TONIGHT with the recently sobered-up Diana Taurasi in town! Pro hoops! Okay, sorry. We find The Dubliner authentic Irish Pub, where we order up pizza slices (The Reet- good crust, lousy meatballs), shepherd's pie (Keith-can't remember his opinion, but he ate it all!), Irish sandwich (JK-corned beef 'n fixins', delicious w/ Guinness). "Going the the game?" queries a young gent as he delivers our orders. No, going to the Wolf Den, Dr. John is playing tonight. This throws our boy a bit, but he recovers quickly offering, "Oh, the comedian?" No, but good try. Jeez, I HOPE it's not Dr. John, the comedian!

Back at the Den, it's after seven, some guests have been seated for the show. The front rail at the bar has plenty of room, so we grab two spots/two beers and peoplewatch until showtime. The Reet does not join us, for she is a rambler and a gambler, and prefers to listen to her music at the poker machines. The booths directly below us are empty, reserved for the high-rollers (aka big losers).

Dr. John (real name Mac Rebennack) and his backup boys, The Lower 911 (bass/drums/guitar), come out promptly at eight and immediately funk up the joint. The Night Tripper then pounds his piano (even plays guitar on one song), mumbles jive and sings as only he can for the next hour and a half, sampling just about every phase of his recordings. He plays several numbers from his latest, The City That Care Forgot, and lets it be known that he's none too happy about the way his beloved town was treated after Katrina. For the ladies, he plays Candy from his 1989 album of standards, In a Sentimental Mood (damn it, I HAVE that CD, but I can't find it anywhere!). Some creepy moments below us as a glassy-eyed older guy goes around asking women to dance, staring at them from a distance before each, soon-to-be-rebuffed approach. Of course, everyone waits for Right Place and he finally gets the whole place dancing (creepy guy finally finds someone!) with it. My personal fav is Such a Night:
Your eyes caught mine, and at a glance
You let me know that this was my chance
But you came here with my best friend Jim
And here I am, tryin' to steal you away from him
Oh, but if I don't do it, you know somebody else will
If I don't do it, you know somebody else will

For his one-song encore, the good Dr. plays the iconic Iko Iko, made famous by the Dixie Cups in the 60s, but covered by dozens of artists over the years: From Wiki (so it must be true) - Following is the "Iko Iko" story, as told by Dr. John in the liner notes to his 1972 album, Dr. John's Gumbo, in which he covers New Orleans R&B classics:
"The song was written and recorded back in the early 1950s by a New Orleans singer named James Crawford who worked under the name of Sugar Boy & the Cane Cutters. It was recorded in the 1960s by the Dixie Cups for Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller's Red Bird Records, but the format we're following here is Sugar Boy's original. Also in the group were Professor Longhair on piano, Jake Myles, Big Boy Myles, Irv Bannister on guitar, and Eugene 'Bones' Jones on drums. The group was also known as the Chipaka Shaweez. The song was originally called 'Jockamo,' and it has a lot of Creole patois in it. Jockamo means 'jester' in the old myth. It is Mardi Gras music, and the Shaweez was one of many Mardi Gras groups who dressed up in far out Indian costumes and came on as Indian tribes. The tribes used to hang out on Claiborne Avenue and used to get juiced up there getting ready to perform and 'second line' in their own special style during Mardi Gras. That's dead and gone because there's a freeway where those grounds used to be. The tribes were like social clubs who lived all year for Mardi Gras, getting their costumes together. Many of them were musicians, gamblers, hustlers and pimps."

And The Reet won $27!!!!! Such a night!

Another nod to the legend of the Farquahr...

Walt Sar has left a new comment on your post "My eggs don't taste the same without you...":
I was sorry to hear of Dennis McGowan's passing. I remember when he sang with The Avalons in Branford, CT. Great voice. Ed Hayden sang lead on "Coming Home", 'Pick Hit of the Week' on WNHC. Doug Lapham was a good friend and a great writer, attested by the Ral Donner songs. What ever happened to Mike Packavitch, Charlie Witkowski, and Jonesy? Is Van McKlee still in ShortBeach? Those were the days my friend !!! Walt Jaye -email

Monday morning trail mix...

Up early and down to get blood work (got compliment for my Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar tee shirt), then out to the trail for a quick powerwalk. First song was a perfect start to the day. I'm unapologetic. Bat Out of Hell is, without reservation, one of my all-time favorite albums. Post-Bat Meat Loaf is boring crap, but this set of teen-angst songs is a perfect blend of bombastic/over-the-top/Phil Spector-inspired (catch the "Be My Baby" riff stolen from the Ronettes) production, clever/funny lyrics, great melodies. Produced by Todd Rundgren.

Per Wikipedia (so it MUST be true): Bat out of Hell is a 1977 album by singer Meat Loaf, songwriter Jim Steinman, and producer Todd Rundgren that became the third best-selling album worldwide behind Michael Jackson's Thriller and AC/DC's Back In Black, continuing to sell approximately 200,000 per year. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at number 343 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2003. Its musical style is influenced by Steinman's appreciation of Richard Wagner, Phil Spector and Bruce Springsteen. - complete entry

July 13: Dezron Douglas/Lummie Spann Quintet; Taeko Fukao and her trio
July 20, Ed Fast/Conga Bop; Michele Rosewoman & Quintessence, plus guests

From the Courant's Owen McNally: After last summer's fare that was nobly, if not popularly, devoted to the avant-garde, the free Monday Night Jazz Series in Bushnell Park this summer fields a more varied, accessible lineup. Marking its 42nd year, the series, which runs for five consecutive Monday nights, begins its new season Monday night with Afro-Semitic Experience, which celebrates the cultural and musical heritage of the Jewish and African diasporas. It is the brainchild of Jewish-American bassist David Chevan and African-American pianist Warren Byrd. The George Blackman Group opens. ....Maurice Robertson, the new artistic director of the series, describes this summer's focus as "a jazz catalog that is diverse and accessible." - complete article

Christopher Dubose in concert...

Troubadour Christopher Dubose in concert spinning a tell of love and lust with an older woman:

A history of folk icons: Chris Dubose
Hailing from the Bump 'N Grind coffee house in Medway, MA, Chris Dubose rose to the top of the folk scene in 2000 with his debut album, Speak English, Talk Smack, which featured the epic "Tom Needs a Nap.". The troubadour's latest album, Retired 'N Confused, merges Chris Dubose's hushed hooks with countrified piano flourishes to somehow churn out simply beautiful music. With standout tracks like "Kath's on the Run" and "Cougar Jan," look for Chris Dubose to be a major force in the folk landscape for years to come.

Bettye LaVette in Central Park Friday night (Jonathan & Garrett, you MUST go!)...

The Man (no, not Stan) to play Palace Theater in Waterbury...

Up early this morning reading Hartford Courant's Cal (what a spiffy abreviation of Calendar!), when I spot a blurb that "tickets go on sale Monday at 10am for an Oct 24 Van Morrison 'Astral Weeks' concert at the Palace Theater in Waterbury." And I don't want to hear from all the Van haters who despise his distant, calculated concert persona. Enough.

For those who are laying around the shanty, Jonathan Edwards plays a free concert tonight at the East Hartford Town green.

Friday night concert series at Meadowbrook Park in Hamden (where Dan Gooley bounced his hole-in-one down the fairway many moons ago) has Eight To the Bar tomorrow night and Tower of Power (I'm assuming without Victor Conte on bass) the following week.

Really cool free concert next Tuesday at Mohegan Sun's Wolf Den - Dr. John & the Lower 911! The Reet agrees to go if she can play the poker machines during the show. Agreed. I'll watch from that little bar they have along the back rail. The Neville Brothers will be there on Thursday, August 27.

Okay, I'll buy it, but don't you dare take out the stripper poles...

50 Cent slashes price on Conn. mansion to $10.9M (AP)
FARMINGTON, Conn. – The price of the Connecticut mega-mansion owned by rapper 50 Cent has dropped again — to $10.9 million. The 50,000-square-foot mansion is in the Hartford metropolitan area suburb Farmington. It was owned by boxer Mike Tyson. It has 19 bedrooms and 37 bathrooms. It boasts a gym, billiards rooms, racquetball courts and a disco with stripper poles. The New York City rapper bought it for $4.1 million. He said it had "a 'Miami Vice' feel" and spent $6 million on renovations and repairs. The home was for sale for nearly two years before being pulled off the market in May. The initial $18.5 million price dropped to $14.5 million late last year. 50 Cent says he's tired of the two-hour commute to New York City and wants to downsize.

Buyer reportedly found for former Tyson property
Unconfirmed sources report that Pool Hall Stud Mark G has agreed in principle to purchase the Farmington (CT) property currently owned by rapper 50 (Fiddy) Cent for $10,000,000. The purchase shocked the local real estate community who never saw it coming - who IS this guy? Well, perhaps this quote explains everything: "I was saying to the little woman that properties like that need an ego," explained the tall, buzz-cut, small-time hustler while relaxing at his Fairfield county estate. "There are very few who possess an ego large enough to own that particular piece. I am one of those few." Brilliantly stated.

I can (finally) hear music...

Since returning from Jazz Fest in early May, my concert-going has been limited to one weekday evening at Bushnell Park for the Blackeyed 'N Blues Festival and one Saturday night at Bonterra for dinner and music. But enough of running golf tournaments, completing my CPE credits, etc., the next month seems to be stocked with good stuff (although I did miss the Felice Brothers at Cafe Nine last night!)

  • Monday nights at Bushnell Park in Hartford for the Summer Jazz Series.
  • 7/24 Friday evening in NYC with the boys from Brooklyn to see Bettye LaVette at Central Park Summerstage. They do not yet know of this, so I'd better tell them soon.
  • 7/31 Friday night at the Litchfield Jazz Festival with Trish/George for its opening gala and performance by Jane Monheit.
  • 8/5 Wednesday night at Cafe Nine to catch Rosie Flores.
  • 8/6 Thursday night at Oakdale to see Bonnie Raitt (splendid at Jazz Fest) and Taj Mahal with the Andersons (and possibly the Valentes)
  • 8/8 Saturday night with Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles at Hygienic Art Park in New London, CT. Anyone want to go with us?
  • From The New Yorker...

    United breaks guitars (very funny)...

"United Breaks Guitars" a Smash Hit on YouTube Airline apologizes, wants to use video to train employees.
Anyone who's lost a bag or had their stuff damaged by an airline knows the frustration -- you spend hours on the phone, often with a call center in India, and feel like you're getting nowhere. Such was the plight of Dave Carroll, a Canadian musician who says United Airlines baggage handlers smashed his favorite Taylor guitar as he changed planes at O'Hare. As Carroll and the rest of the band sat on the plane, another passenger saw the baggage handlers tossing guitars to one another and shouted, "My God, they're throwing guitars out there!" Carroll said the base of his guitar was smashed. He tried to reason with United for months to get them to pay the $1,200 repair cost -- but he got the run-around, and ultimately they wouldn't. So, Carroll did what he does best. He wrote a song about it, "United Breaks Guitars." - complete article
