Fabulous Farquahr notes from Ned....

Hi. I saw the post about the Fab Farquahr on your blog. My dad, Ed Hayden, was best friends w/ Doug Lapham, the leader of the group. My mom also grew up and was best friends with his wife, Sue. The band actually wasn't from Cape Cod as stated on your blog, they all lived in the Guilford/Branford area of Connecticut. I forgot the town Doug's house was in, but i spent a lot of time there growing up. The Macgowans lived nearby there too and I remember they were antique car collectors and used to drive them around a lot. I even saw the band once when I was a teenager in New York City. They were great. Anyway, enjoyed reading about them and thought I'd just throw my two cents of memories in. -Ned Hayden

johnnykmusic- Thanks for writing, Ned. I have received dozens of emails during the past year asking for more information about the beloved Farquahr. previous post

I only heard them live once at Barristers in Worcester, but many friends had records and played the songs.

Last winter at a restaurant at Mt. Snow, I saw a "Fabulous Farquahr" poster on the wall. The manager was a friend of the Farquahr and said they played Mt. Snow often.

I saw these guys many times at a place called Charlie Bates Saloon, around 78th and 1st in NYC. They were great. Their love song was "My Eggs Don't Taste the Same Without You". Dennis MacGowan was "The Barnswallow". Frank was "Flamingo". I think Doug was "Hummingbird". I actually have their 33 lp album. We hired them to put on a show at my college, CCNY Downtown (now Baruch College). There is even a spread in my 1968 yearbook from this concert. They were really great, and had tons of personality. Dennis and Frank were really fun. They did a great version of The Beatles "With a Little Help From My Friends".

Correction....Dennis was "Condor Farquahr". The rest will come to me.

I worked in a bluegrass/folk group "Open All Night" and we did a version of "Dear John Deere". Lately, I've been thinking of recording the song. (I've done three self produced CDs.) Found a recording of the "Roadside Review" with "Dear John Deere". My understanding is the song was written by "Barnswallow Farquahr" or Doug Lapham from the group "The Fabulous Farquahr". Anyone else have any more info please let me know. Thanks!
