gator got yer granny....Tony Joe White...

Now saved, Gumbo and I made our way through the rain to Southern Comfort Blues Tent to catch a set of Sunpie & the Louisiana Sunspots with guest Al "Carnival Time" Johnson. As the skies cleared, we were finally able move about and hear some great music the rest of the day. At some point, the two wimps arrived in the fairgrounds, but we never got reconnected. Caught the end of Chuck Leavell (AllmanBrothers/Rolling Stones keyboardist) with the Randall Bramlett Band and the beginning of the Luther Kent & Trickbag. Gumbo split to hear Amanda Shaw & the Cute Guys and has not stopped raving about her. He also managed to hear George Benson.

For me, the best performance of the day was Tony Joe White, known by most for his 1960's hit Poke-Salad Annie. When we got back to the Blues tent, Tony Joe was just getting started, alone on stage, dressed completely in black, voice deeper than a coalmine, playing some electric guitar blues with added mouth harp riffs. I admit, it was good, but I was a little disappointed that he had no band. Not to worry. "I want to bring my drummer out here and let's see if we can crank it up a little for y'all," he drawled. Wow, did the pace change! With his boy (couldn't catch the name) providing the steady back beat, White launched into a string of swamp blues that kept getting better and better and better with each song - unbelievable.
