Topspin is the story of my life...

Yes, I questioned that strange streetcorner philosophy, too, quipped self-effacingly today by an annoying golf opponent after one long, low, bending tee shot during his less-than-stellar round.  My thoughts turned to "dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind."  They also turned to "I'm a loser and I'm not what I appear to be."

Next weekend is Labor Day Weekend, and that means the annual Rhythm & Roots Festival in Charlestown, RI.  The Reet and I, along with Keith and Sharie plan to go on Sunday to catch the likes of Geoff Muldaur (Maria's ex), Dave Alvin, CJ Chenier, Steve Riley, Donna the Buffalo and Robert Randolph & the Family Band.  Anyone else in?

And so, the sitting isn't worth talking about, just a reflection of life going exactly how I planned. Afterwords though, We're Not John and Yoko (my girlfriend and I) went to a concert at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan featuring John Cleary and then the new sensation Trombone Shorty...At present we are riding the train home, phone click, it's 11:44 PM and I'm racing to get today's "Morning Pages" done, yeah quotes still needed, whatever. Let's admit they have turned into, or always were, "Today's Pages", and that's fine with me as long as I get them done. The featuring artists were a suggestion by my father who had seen them at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, quote, "Something you can not miss, " said John Kennedy, my father. Phone click. 11:46 PM...still racing against time. Well, we left the concert early, so you may assume I won't highly praise. I'm not much of a reviewer, it's so hard to not sound cliche, forced and cynical. But here we, I, go...It was good, but not worth 40 bucks a ticket...which obviously leads to 80 a ticket because each person is going to drop at least 40 on booze, damn 12 dollar margaritas, but they were so good...phone click...11:49, Yvette's (Not Yoko) sleeping. John Cleary was cool. I think I asked my dad this, but is he the one singing in the movie Major League? I think he said no, but a comparison nonetheless. To me the highlight of the show was Trombone Shorty's guitarist. Shorty's band has a rock element that I didn't expect and was cool - but he lost me when he sang the Black Eyed Peas song "Let's Get It Started". And in closing, after Shorty said let's get it started, We're Not John and Yoko said, let's not, and go home, our feet killing us, sorry Dad! I would recommend seeing Cleary and Trombone Shorty though, but not for 40 bucks, really 80 bucks...and hey, Garrett, let's get it started with these "Morning Pages" a little earlier tomorrow, say, in the morning.

Trombone Shorty is a young man on a mission. He's determined to spread the good-time vibes of New Orleans music, in all its stylistic guises, to audiences around the world. The multi-instrumentalist and singer, born Troy Andrews, carries his mission to Connecticut on Friday at Norfolk's Infinity Hall with his group, Orleans Avenue. Concertgoers should be prepared to be showered by Orleans Avenue's multidirectional grooves, searing guitar leads and dance-happy horn charts. Sunday in Brooklyn...

Soundtrack:

• Diana Krall's Quiet Nights on the trip down.  Kind of sappy, but great for a rainy Sunday morning where we missed our BQE transfer from the Hutch and ended up driving past the new Yankee Stadium while trying to get back on track.
• Gathered up JFK, G-Man and Yvette in Bay Ridge and took the train to Park Slope for some excellent steak & eggs-over-easy and a Bloody Mary at Okeono at the corner of 7th Ave/8th.  Can't remember the background music.  Sorry.
• Got soaked and chilled on the walk to the Union Hall.   Union Hall is a 5,000 square foot bar, restaurant and live music venue in the heart of Park Slope, Brooklyn.  Painstakingly converted from a warehouse, it offers cozy firesides, a stately library, two indoor bocce courts, outdoor garden seating, and a downstairs bar and music venue. New York Press says Union Hall "offers downtown style mixed with Brooklyn's trademark down-to-earth friendliness."  We never got to challenge the bocce pros, but sipped beers as JFK slipped a buck into the jukebox to play some Black Keys, Clash and The Hold Steady.
• For the return trip - Backatown from Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, who appear this Friday night at Infinity Music Hall & Bistro in Norfolk.

Stone Poneys' Kenny Edwards dead at 64 (AP)
LOS ANGELES – Kenny Edwards, an original member of the Stone Poneys country-rock band and longtime collaborator with singer-songwriters Linda Ronstadt and Karla Bonoff, has died in California at age 64.  A statement on his website says he died Wednesday.  The Los Angeles Times reports Edwards was hospitalized earlier this month in Denver after collapsing while on tour with Bonoff. He was airlifted to a hospital near his home in Santa Barbara where he died.  After the Stone Poneys disbanded after their 1967 breakthrough hit "Different Drum," Edwards formed the folk-rock band Bryndle with singer-songwriter Wendy Waldman, Bonoff and Andrew Gold.  He also was a supporting guitarist and singer for Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Brian Wilson, Art Garfunkel, Vince Gill and others.

Erykah Badu  Pays $500 Fine For Disorderly Conduct For Music Video
(tvguide.com) Singer Erykah Badu has paid a $500 fine and will serve six months of probation for disorderly conduct after filming a music video that offended tourists, The Associated Press reports.  On March 13, Badu stripped naked and acted out being fatally shot in Dallas' Dealey Plaza —where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated — for a music video for her song "Window Seat."  (Erykah Badu defends video: "My point was grossly misunderstood")  After the video was released, a witness complained about the filming and said she was offended. Badu, 39, was then cited in April for disorderly conduct.  Badu defended the video, saying it was "grossly misunderstood" and not intended to insult the memory of the late president.

Geils didn't do a tune together at Fenway? It might have to do with a last-minute feud between the bands' famously demanding frontmen Steven Tyler and Peter Wolf. We're told Tyler didn't want Wolf to use the ramp that extended into the audience and told him so the night before the show. According to our source, the singers had a "heated argument'' in the outfield as a few dozen workers put the finishing touches on the stage Friday. Needless to say, the emotions were not so sweet. more

What's all the buzz about Best Coast?...

California duo puts girly spin on simple surf-pop 
NEW YORK (Billboard) – She's a breezy California surf rocker, a throwback '90s indie queen and a savvy Twitter star all rolled into one. But Best Coast singer-songwriter Bethany Cosentino is something else too: a certifiable "It" girl who has been featured in Vogue and Rolling Stone.  The California-based Best Coast -- comprising Cosentino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno -- is riding a wave of blog buzz into the mainstream spotlight, a first for the band and its label, Brooklyn-based indie label Mexican Summer, which picked up the pair's debut, "Crazy for You."  "She's the only artist I can remember that hasn't had the backlash for being a blog band," Mexican Summer director of marketing/label manager Jeffrey Kaye says. "People are championing her and want her to succeed."  "Crazy for You" entered the Billboard 200 last week at No. 36 with 10,000 units sold and debuted at No. 10 on the Digital Albums chart.  Best Coast, which begins its first U.S. tour September 4, specializes in sun-baked, simple, short surf-pop ditties, sung in a dry, girly monotone and recorded in a '90s lo-fi style.  The band's sales breakdown is a bit of a throwback, too. Kaye reports that sales have been running 50 percent digital, 30 percent CD and 20 percent vinyl -- very gratifying for the label, which started as a purely digital/vinyl outlet. Best Coast is its first CD release.  "You would have thought a good chunk of that audience would have downloaded it illegally and been done," Kaye says. "But given the package's artwork and the hand-numbered copies, they wanted to own it."

Back from the Cape...

Nice, relaxing, great hosts (thanks, John/Judi), good food.  Daytrippers to Martha's Vineyard on the Island Queen out of Falmouth.  Lunch on the deck overlooking the water at The Seafood Shanty in Edgartown, then some shopping at the Black Dog (tee shirts for the boys in Brooklyn, hat for me).  Saw a Parsons Buick as we walked back to get the bus to Oak Bluffs!  More window shopping.  Margaritas and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer at the Lobster Bat (I think) as we wait for a return to Falmouth on the Island Queen.  Who's on the bar Ipod?  Deertick.

Richie Hayward, co-founder of Little Feat, dies NEW YORK (AP)
Richie Hayward, co-founder of the Little Feat, an eclectic jamband that maintained a strong cult following throughout the decades, has died. He was 64.  The drummer had been suffering from liver cancer and died Thursday at a hospital near Vancouver, Canada, after complications of pneumonia, his publicist, Bridget Nolan, confirmed Friday.  "He was waiting for a liver transplant," said Nolan. Over the past year, benefits had been staged on Hayward's behalf; he had no health insurance.  In a letter to fans last August, Hayward wrote about his predicament, but sounded hopeful: "My intent is to come back to the band, as soon as I am physically able. Your love and support will mean a lot to me, more than I can say. I love and will miss you all, and I will see you again on the proud highway."  He last performed with the band on July 11.  Hayward helped form Little Feat in 1969, along with frontman Lowell George, Bill Payne and Roy Estrada.   The jamband mixed a variety of genres including rock, country, jazz and blues, and were known for songs like "Willin." The group fell apart in 1979 after George died, but reformed in 1987, and had been a fixture on the touring circuit.  Besides his work with Little Feat, Hayward also performed with acts including Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Buddy Guy and Barbra Streisand.

In a flash, he was there, sitting in his customary stool at the far end of the bar at AJ's, holding court with a large band of wellwishers (with the exception of one of the Pool Hall Studs, who was jealous of the attention and drove to New Jersey).  Then he was gone.  The legend of Johnny Gumbo.

Heard the news today, oh boy....

Word:  Johnny Gumbo hits town Monday afternoon!  He'll be at AJ's around 4PM and rumor has it that all who announce to their server that  they are friends of the Gumbo get a free bowl of piping hot 'n spicy gumbo, specially prepared by Barry D for the occasion!  So come meet him, greet him, hug him, kiss him, do whatever with him, because he won't be here long (thank God!)!  After a brief press conference, he will be hawking and autographing copies of his latest album,  If You Must Unite, Please Do It Civilly.

Emerging from the deltas of Nowheresville, USA, the Johnny Gumbo Party Band rose to the top of the blues scene in 1999 with their debut album, This Thang Too Spicy For Ya, Mama?.  The band's next album, Western Horizons, hijacked Gumbo's poignant vocals with delicate finger-picked guitar to evoke simply stunning compositions, with standout tracks like "Accidents, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention," and "Intersections are for stopping??" dominating radio airwaves far and wide.  The band's latest album, If You Must Unite, Please Do It Civilly, merges the one and only Johnny Gumbo's spit-shined originals with roadhouse slide guitar to churn out the group's most uplifting album to date. George and Trish at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA....

World travelers George 'N Trish are off to Bethlehem, PA for Musikfest, which is being held from August 6-15.   On Friday night, G&T saw 2U, a U2 tribute band (but you already guessed that, didn't you). Tonight, Norah Jones.

Update from Trish:  Musikfest was much more substantial that we expected – they get about a million people each year and I think they were all there on Saturday night at the Norah Jones concert.  We had reserved seats about 3 miles back from the stage – not really but it seemed that far.  Maybe a half mile.  Anyway, they had stage screens so it was alright.  Elvis Perkins opened with his Dylanesque set – not at all Sharon’s pick of the night but I found him interesting, out there musically and lyrically, one song was something about when you die you go to Viet Nam which admittedly no one in my grouping of four “got”  - he’s a little on the dark side, ballads chock full of emotional pain but not edgy like the old Lucinda, more bluesy on some substance I have never experienced except maybe similar to one time in my life when I was feeling pretty scattered and depressed.  Anyway, in another venue I might have liked it better but as an opener for Norah with just himself and his ‘guitar from afar’, it was a bit hard to engage.  Norah was stunning in her red dress and she sounded better than ever.  I was taken in by her early stuff but she has matured a lot and has taken on more variety – I guess some might say she hasn’t decided what venue she wants to stick with but my impression was that she can go in any direction she pleases and she can make it work for her.

Rads...

The Radiators at Mohegan Sun Wolf Den - After starting my league match with a couple pars, I turned into a bogie machine Wednesday afternoon.  Oh well, I suck.  Throw the shoes and clubs into the truck, speed  home for a quick shower, then The Reet and I are off to Uncasville to catch the Radiators' show at eight.  Well, that's my intent, The Reet is only going for the video poker.  We originally planned to meet friends on Thursday, but when I found that the Rads were here on Wednesday, Reet, we gotta go!  Thursday was the Desert Rose Band (with ex-Byrds/Buffalo Springfield/Souther Hillman Furay Band member Chris Hillman), which isn't bad.  Still, opt for the Rads.  We arrive with a few minutes to spare, but parking is a bitch.  Summer is full, we settle for Winter, at the top, but it gets us close to the Wolf Den, where I plan to get a place along the rail at the bar.  After tearful goodbyes, The Reet and I go our separate ways.  The bar is located in right-centerfield as you look out from the stage.  It's a good spot, even though you stand.  PHS Barry D said he was coming, too, but he was three foursomes behind me at golf.   I don't know where the other Stud is, perhaps on the red carpet somewhere with Mark Wahlberg for the opening of  The Other Guys.

Lots of miles on this bunch.  After a few minutes for a sound check, they're ready to go.  The almost packed crowd seems pretty familiar with the music, so we're lucky not too many of the comped 'high-losers' chose to come.   Ace in the Hole sounds great, as does a cover of Neil Diamond's Solitary Man.  Lots of (large) booty-shakin' going on.  The guy in back of me starts apologizing for spilling beer on me, saying that bitch bumped him.  No problem, pal.  After about forty-five minutes I look over toward the bar and, lo and behold, Barry D!  Hey, how long you been here?  'Bout three songs, I flew down here alone, Mark is on his way to Jersey. Hearing the Radiators tonight, I'm reminded of the old Lowell George Little Feat.  A quick encore and it's all over before 9:30.  Thought it might be a bit longer.  Call it a night.  The Reet is pissed, lost $60.

The band formed in January 1978 in Keyboardist Ed Volker's garage. Ed, Frank Bua, and Camille Baudoin were performing in one band together, with Dave Malone and Reggie Scanlan in another. "Ed invited us to come over to his house and jam; Dave and I figured we'd have a few beers together and play a couple of blues tunes," remembers Scanlan, "instead, we jammed for five hours straight, then all quit our old bands the next day."  Since that legendary first jam session, the Radiators have developed into a strong national act, a result of their marathon length live shows and a relentless touring schedule. The Radiators quickly became one of New Orleans' hottest musical acts, then rose to national prominence as their fans spread the word across the country. In New York City, for example, crowds that started with transplanted Tulane University graduates dancing at the Lone Star Cafe steadily grew. This story has been echoed by similar ground swells rippling across the country.

Their reputation has been further augmented by a sizable body of recorded work - eleven albums released on labels including Epic/C.B.S. and Croaker Records. Aside from backing up such New Orleans legends as Dr. John, Professor Longhair and Earl King, the Radiators have appeared with the Allman Brothers, Little Feat, B.B. King, Robert Cray, The Band, Los Lobos and Taj Mahal to name a few. They are also a featured mainstay of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival every year, owning the coveted closing spot on one of the main stages and playing to an audience approaching 30,000.
