The Legendary Gussy P chimes in...
Last week, I asked for some of your offerings of your perfect fantasy band (see posting). Well, the one, the only (perhaps a good thing) Gussy P, former lead vocalist/bassist/songwriter/defensive stopper for the iconic Westie Punks, has announced his. This guy knows his shit, so pay attention!
As usual, I'm late responding to something. Let's hope no one ever needs to receive 'the antidote' from me quickly. At any rate, if I'm allowed to use some deceased band members, here's an interesting collection:
- lead singer: Lowell George
- back up vocalists: Naomi somebody & Mary somebody - the Hot Licks from Dan Hicks' band during my college years (early 70's)
- guitarists: Steve Hunter & Dick Wagner (Intro to Sweet Jane, Lou sent them packing fromGermany - "I'm the star," also Alice Cooper part II, I believe)
- keyboards: Ray Manzera (Doors) He was interviewed on a salute to the old UCLA teams, as he was an art student in the early 60's - no mention of Sam Gilbert (the real Wizard of Westwood) during the time I was watching. Garth Hudson (The Band) can understudy
- brass: Earle McIntyre, Howard Johnson, Snooky Young, JD Parran, & Joe Farrell - 1st two played on Taj Mahal "Real Thing" live album, & all of them played on The Band's "Rock of Ages" live songs
JK comment: Excellent, as always, Gus. Very nice call on Lowell George. (Quick reminder confirming our annual Christmas shopping get together in the Macy's women's lingerie department.)
- writer: Robbie Robertson, but then he'll want to play guitar, and then take over the group - it could get ugly

Cyber Sunday bonus offering...
You Know What? (Dr. John Gumbo & Friends)
Music offerings from deceased artists are normally just crap, mediocre rehashings/outtakes of previously-issued material deemed unsuitable for market in the first place. But an exception to that rule may just be this treasure trove of newly discovered recordings of the late, almost great Johnny Gumbo made with some of the legends of the New Orleans music/social scene from 2004 until his untimely passing in 2011. Painstakingly re-mastered by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach ("I grew up hearing sooooo much about this Gumbo cat, man!") from dusty audio tapes found in some voodoo witch's lingerie basket, these recordings, to be released only on vinyl, capture The Gumbo at his spiciest.
The album song listing:

The album song listing:
- The Big Me (a self-love story)- A Ska-influenced rap with Pool Hall Stud Marky G apparently recorded in a late-night bullshit session in the Warehouse District in 2004, backed by PHS Barry D's safe sax.
- She's So Fine- Noted NOLA songstress/watermelon tricket designer/runway model, Scarlett O'Hara, lends her unique, weathered voice to a Gumbo classic.
- Bar Stoolin'- A Cheers-like ditty with a dubbed-in chorus by the AJ Barroom Chorale
- Sorry, Barkeep- Gumbo's bluesy ode to his strict no-tip philosophy when ordering at the bar; Bobby Louis diTullio of the Little Freddie King Blues Band lends a wailing harmonica to the proceedings.
- Gumbo Got Bed (JK Got Floor)- Yeah, I had the floor that time back when Gumbo refused to share his bed; the Shoe Ladies' Soul Sister Revue backing vocals make even Gumbo sound good!
- Red Red Wine- Neil Diamond cover; Gumbo's whiskey-soaked vocals whispered over Allen Toussaint's reluctant ("I knew I shouldn't have come here tonight") piano.
- I'm Okay, Just Doesn't Look That Way- Before forming the semi-successful Johnny Gumbo Party Band, Gumbo played bass with Sly & the Family Stone (bet you can't pick him out); this song shows Gumbo's funk-you attitude along with funkbuddy Trombone Shorty.
- Going To A-Go-Go- Disco Johnny going retro; not a pretty sight.

Steely Dan knows shopping....
Black Friday Steely Dan songfacts
When Black Friday comes I'll stand down by the door
And catch all the grey men as they dive from the fourteenth floor
When Black Friday comes I'll collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out I'll be on the road
When Black Friday falls you know it's got to be
Don't let it fall on me
When Black Friday comes I'll fly down to Muswellbrook
Gonna strike all the big red words from my little black book
Gonna do just what I please, gonna wear no socks and shoes
With nothing to do but feed all the Kangaroos
When Black Friday comes I'll stand down by the door
And catch all the grey men as they dive from the fourteenth floor
When Black Friday comes I'll collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out I'll be on the road

Giving you the bird!...
(NPR) - The lead-up to Thanksgiving can be tough. There's the teeth-gnashing
at the airport and the gray despair of the bus terminal, which is saying
nothing of what happens if you've walked in your family's front door
without having made tangible progress toward satiating your mom's hunger
for grandchildren. You may have to take that hit, too.
But
once everyone has gathered around the table and the second bottle of
wine has been killed, the bad stuff falls away. Whether you're having
turkey, turducken, tofurkey or fish tacos, the family is together, and
that's what important. So here's a mix designed to help you keep your
mind on the bonding-fueled feast that justifies it all. And if
"Blueberry Yum Yum" just happens to inspire you to call the boy from
down the block and give it another shot, we can only say, "You're
welcome." Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy birthday, Dr. John...
Dr. John,
or Mac Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally
celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage
exclusive to New Orleans. His very colorful musical career began in the
1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records
to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor
Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. A notorious gun incident forced the artist to give up the guitar and
concentrate on organ and piano. Further trouble at home sent Dr. John
west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session
musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha
Franklin and The Rolling Stones' infamous Exile On Main St. to name a
few.
During that time he also launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John, The Nite Tripper. Adorned with voodoo charms and regalia, a legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-gris, which established his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots.
Several of his many career highlights include the masterful album Sun, Moon and Herbs in 1971 which included cameos from Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger and 1973’s In The Right Place, which contained the chart hits “Right Place Wrong Time” and “Such A Night.” (read more)

Bands On the Run...
G-Man saw this and suggested that I post it to get y'all's take
Last week, NME magazine published its Ultimate Band issue (you can order a digital copy here) asking the best of the music world to tell who they would pick for their fantasy band line-up. A few of the responses are shown here. Of course they are serious artsy-fartsy bands with real reasons to pick the members, but I know my vast, knowledgeable constituency can do just as well, and with some attitude and creativity thrown in for good measure. We'll let G-man start it off:
Band Name: Hipster's Hipster by G-Man
Lead Singer: Dan Auerbach. His voice can carry any song.
Background vocals: Cat Power. Never heard anything like her voice and imagine it harmonizing with Auerbach's!
Guitarist: Jack White. I've never heard cooler riffs. He can do anything with the instrument
Songwriter / harmonica: Bob Dylan. No reasons needed.
Hey, hold your horses.....I thinking, I'm thinking..... okay, here goes
Band Name: No, Johnny, No! by JohnnyK
Dex Romweber (guitar) - intense, frenetic, very cool
Solomon Burke (vocals/sweat) -
Sarah Borges (vocals/rhythm guitar) - sorry I missed her last Saturday at Cafe Nine with her new band
Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie (piano/theatrics) - see D, Romweber above
Willie Nelson (acoustic guitar) - love his pickin'
Johnny Gumbo (band manager) - we wouldn't make any money, but we'd have a GOOD time!
Bobby Louis diTullio (harmonica) - from Little Freddie King Blues Band; spent some quality time with Gumbo outside Ryan's Pub at Jazz Fest a few years back
Lucinda Williams (songwriter) - just in case we're having too much fun, Cindy will bring us down a peg.
The Pool Hall Studs (rap/disharmony/self-admiration) - they're great, just ask 'em!
Jaco Pastorious (bass) - loved him even before Joni found him
Patrick Carney (drums) - because no one pays any attention to him
Let's see what you got! Gussy P, I'm looking at you!

Cleve Duncan, the Voice of ‘Earth Angel’, Dies...
By DOUGLAS MARTIN (NY Times)
Cleve Duncan, whose soaring tenor voice as lead singer for the Penguins helped propel the 1954 doo-wop ballad “Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)” to rock ’n’ roll immortality, died on Nov. 7 in Los Angeles. Art Laboe, a disc jockey who promoted Penguins concerts and produced one
of Mr. Duncan’s records, announced the death on his Web site. Many
sources have Mr. Duncan’s age as 77, but according to his voting records
he was 78. “Earth Angel,” which has sold more than 10 million copies, was the
Penguins’ only hit. But its rhythmic, wailing plea to an idealized young
woman captured the spirit of the just-emerging rock generation.
“Earrrrth Aaaangel, Earrrrth Aaaangel, will you be mine?” Mr. Duncan
crooned, backed by close harmony vocals and a strong beat.

only hit. But its rhythmic, wailing plea to an idealized young woman
captured the spirit of the just-emerging rock generation. “Earrrrth
Aaaangel, Earrrrth Aaaangel, will you be mine?” Mr. Duncan crooned,
backed by close harmony vocals and a strong beat. For many the song evokes a glittering, timeless vision of proms, sock
hops and impossibly young love. Rolling Stone placed it on its list of
the 500 greatest songs ever, and films like “Back to the Future” have
used it to conjure an era. Cleveland Duncan was born on July 23 of either 1934 or 1935 in Los
Angeles, and learned to sing in his church choir and glee clubs. In 1953
he was singing in a talent show attended by Curtis Williams, an
aspiring songwriter and baritone singer who thought Mr. Duncan would
best give voice to “Earth Angel.” (Authorship of the song became a topic
of bitter dispute; Jesse Belvin and Gaynel Hodge are now credited along
with Mr. Williams as writers.)
Mr. Duncan and Mr. Williams decided to form a group. Mr. Duncan brought
in Dexter Tisby, a tenor, from his high school, and Mr. Williams brought
in Bruce Tate, a baritone, from his. They took their name from a pack
of Kool cigarettes, whose advertising mascot was a penguin. Several
other vocal groups were named after bird species, so why not? The Penguins gathered in a garage to make their first recording, the B
side of a record by the Dootsie Williams Orchestra. It went unnoticed.
In October 1954 they returned to the garage to record “Hey Senorita,” a
song indisputably by Curtis Williams, as the A side, with “Earth Angel”
on the back. Disc jockeys started playing the B side, and it took off.
In early 1955 “Earth Angel” reached No. 1 on the rhythm-and-blues charts
and No. 8 on the Billboard pop chart, a rare achievement for an R&B
record at the time. As was common, a white group, the Crew-Cuts,
recorded a version of the song. Their rendition reached No. 3, but it is the Penguins’ original that has continued to sell. The Penguins never again came close to their initial success. They
partly blamed Buck Ram, the manager they had hired after scoring their
hit. He also managed the Platters, one of the 1950s’ most successful
groups, and the Penguins came to believe he gave the Platters more
attention and better songs. The Penguins broke up in 1958, but Mr. Duncan later re-formed the group.
With a succession of new members, he led the Penguins for more than 40
years.Information on Mr. Duncan’s survivors was not immediately available. He was convinced that “Earth Angel” would survive in the American
memory. “I never get tired of singing it,” he said, “as long as people
never get tired of hearing it.”
A version of this article appeared in print on November 15, 2012, on page B19 of the New York edition with the headline: Cleve Duncan, the Voice of ‘Earth Angel’.

But ya don't hasta call me Johnson...
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A record store owner has found what
he calls "the holy grail of 78s" in a box of old albums he picked up for
$50. Jerry Weber said he discovered a copy of the second song
ever recorded by Mississippi blues legend Robert Johnson, "I Believe
I'll Dust My Broom," put to disc two years before Johnson's mysterious
death in 1938 at age 27.
The rarity, whose value Weber pegged at $6,000 to $12,000, was tucked in a collection of otherwise worthless, water-damaged old platters that sat in a hallway at Jerry's Records for days before anyone looked at them. "I saw one 30 years ago that was broke," Weber told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "and I saw one that a friend of mine found and let me hold before he sold it. It's the most expensive record I've ever found, and it's in real nice shape."
Johnson was an itinerant singer and guitarist from Hazlehurst, Miss., whose landmark recordings would influence a generation of rock 'n' roll icons, including Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones. Little is known about his life and death. In popular legend, Johnson sold his soul to the Devil at a Mississippi Delta crossroads in return for an extraordinary ability to sing and play the blues. How's your Freaky Friday?...
I was yet again beaten out for Sexiest Man Alive! Go figure.
And you know all those mushy good wishes given out to Gene Z prior to yesterday's hip replacement (God knows, he needs a hipness upgrade)? Well, take them all back, he didn't go!
Latest version of Live From Daryl's House features the one & only Joe Walsh (no, not the congressman) and is also shown on the cable channel, Paladia. Walsh's James Gang stuff was, by far, the highlight of the Eagles' set this year at Jazz Fest.
This Weekend's live music - Plantsville's very own The Sawtelles perform tonight at Typhoon Restaurant in Middletown. Good food, music, atmosphere. BYOB. Free jazz concert at Integrity 'N Music on Silas Deane at 2PM Saturday afternoon. Sarah Borges returns with her new band/new album to Cafe Nine Saturday night in New Haven. Rapper Rant On organized a group to go down for the show, but then blew us all off to go to the Cape for the weekend! WTF, Rant On? Joe Krown Trio featuring Walter "Wolfman" Washington and Russell Batiste, will be at Cafe Nine on Sunday night.

Low Cut Connie storms through New England!...
Due to the freak snowstorm on Wednesday night, I was unable to catch the Connie boys at Cafe Nine in New Haven (Pool Hall Stud Barry D texting he was in until about 4 pm), but Peter, Andy and friends caught them Thursday night at Johnny D's in Somerville. According to Andy, "Great show. Lonely Town (see below) and San Fran Boys were the two best songs, in my opinion."
Peter's take:
Mountain.com story
Peter's take:
Johnny K has been touting these guys for months, so let's see what they got.
Met Andy and Helene at Redbones for a beer. They split a sliders variety pack....looked pretty good. Andy is pushing us to get over to Johnny Ds, because he "(doesn't) want to miss the opening song, in case it's one of my favorites." So, Andy, when was the last time you went to see a rock and roll band and they started on time? But we follow along......and arrive at a not very crowded, actually kinda empty Johnny Ds, and the band on the stage is not LCC. So I ask the guy at the door, what's up, the web site says they were on at 8:30. Oh no, they're on at 9:45, see on my schedule right here on the wall.....musta had it wrong on the web site. No kidding. Old guys like shows early and on time.
We (Andy) think Dressed for the Occasion are pretty good ....young guys with a singer channeling Jim Morrison. They do a good job. On the way to the men's room I stop to say hi to Dan Finnemore. He says there were about four people at Cafe 9 the night before. What a bunch of wimps! Also check out TNF. Luck drops back, heaves a long one...it's intercepted! Whoops, word must have come down from NFLHQ...Can't have that! Quick, flag, roughing the passer. The defender runs right through Luck, just as he throws, great hit, and helmets meet....what's the guy supposed to do? Terrible call. A minute later the Colts are going down for a score.
LCC came out on schedule and put on a great show. I'll hear the CD differently now that I've seen the live act. They are tirelessly energetic and fun. Weiner is a witty, crazy comedian. You can't take your eyes off this guy. Is his father a rabbi? At one point I could swear he suddenly switched persona and became a cantor singing in the synagogue.
Good call by Johnny K

Election nastiness over, Low Cut Connie @ Cafe 9 tonight...
(The Key) -Watch Low Cut Connie jam out at Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar (playing Johnny Brenda’s on Friday)
Ragtime rockers Low Cut Connie performed a surprise lunchtime set yesterday at Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar, the popular South Philly drinkery that’s also one of the featured locations in the band’s recent “Boozophilia” video. In attendance was XPN host Eric Schuman, as well as Dan DeLuca and a video crew from the Philadelphia Inquirer, a cluster of fans and some regular lunchtime patrons taken unawares by the sudden rock show. Eric got two videos of the (very loud) band playing their song “Rio” and jamming with Ray’s owner Lou Capozzoli, who played sax on a cover of the Motown classic “Money (That’s What I Want).” Check the videos out below (and look for more from the Inky later this week). Low Cut Connie plays Johnny Brenda’s on Friday, November 9 – tickets and information can be found here.

Fall Forward, People!...
Brownies poised for a big win v. Ravens today to pull within three games of the AFC North lead! (update: didn't happen) ......and if the Giants do their job, we pull to within two games of the Steelers.....and, if horses fly......after this game, we go into our bi-week (not that there's anything WRONG with that)...
Remember to vote early and often on Tuesday (then, watch Linda McMahon and Chris Murphy tell us what classy campaigns the other ran). Next night, get your lazy asses down to Cafe Nine (yes, you can do it even though it's a work night) to catch Low Cut Connie. You won't be sorry.
I don't want to make you jealous, but last night, WHILE scarfing down some leftover cold pizza (Napoli's, not bad), I watched the 3OT ND/Pitt game, WHILE reading the exposure draft of proposed financial reporting framework for small and medium-sized entities (steamy!), WHILE watching VH-1's Top 100 songs of the 90's! Sorry if your lives are not so fulfilled.

Shout out to Mark & Lisa...
Our Jazz Fest friends from New Jersey, Mark & Lisa, are safe, but their property took a big hit. PHS Mark reports the boardwalk that stretches 5 to 7 towns is completely gone. "No major damage here, but our friends from NJ were crushed. Their house in Avon by the sea had 4 ft of water and most likely will need to be torn down."
Wishing them the best!
I was watching the CMA Awards last night and immediately thought of that old bastard Johnny Gumbo during the tribute to Willie Nelson (also, did not know the inside joke on that Motorboatin' thing).
